This week Erik and Mike interview Artist and gallery owner David Agee. David Agee is a Denver artist and owner of Shed the Skin Gallery, a contemporary venue for emerging local artists. The gallery is located at 4252 Tennyson St. in the Tennyson Art District.
David Agee has mostly been known for intense digital photographs of the temporary instillations he creates. His provocative, cutting-edge photographs are extreme close-ups of the objects of his obsessions, and his use of a macro lens allows him to blur the visual distinctions behind the shapes of mass-produced products and the organic. He gets up close to his subjects and in doing so, reveals universal shapes and the universal way all things decay–they bubble, they drip, they glow and bend light on their journey of transformation and mutation. Thematically, David’s focus is the ecstasy of self-destruction and emotional extremes. In creating these stunning visual records, we are shown that destruction and creation resemble each other when frozen in process by the camera lens. It forces us to question the surface matter of all we take for granted. Lately his artwork has evolved into a more permanent instillation. He has been creating beautifully textured and detailed mixed media pieces that have been getting him positive attention. They are a more tangible expression of his photography, definitely taking him to the next level of being an artist.

    My thought is that Denver is not large enough to have too many art districts that are spread across great distances and that the city would benefit from a couple consolidated districts where artists band together and and compete to strengthen Denver’s overall scene by pushing what goes on within or around those areas.
