This week Erik and Mike welcome Damon McLeese, Executive Director of Access Gallery. Access Gallery, an aspect of VSA (Very Special Arts) of Colorado, is a studio and gallery that brings art and creative expression to people with disabilities. VSA arts of Colorado is focused on creating a world where people with disabilities have the opportunity to learn through, participate in, and enjoy the arts. VSA arts is an international nonprofit organization founded in 1974 by Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith. Nearly five million people with disabilities participate in VSA arts programs each year through affiliate programs in each state and over sixty countries worldwide.

This week Erik and Mike welcome back painter Rick Dula to complete the interview that was interrupted by technical difficulties a few weeks ago. Rick is one of 17 artists participating in the Embrace! Exhibition at The Denver Art Museum. Rick’s contribution to this giant installation project is titled “A Moment in Time: Here”; a photo realistic mural depicting the Hamilton Building’s skeletal structure. Rick also exhibits at William Havu Gallery.

Join us as Erik and Mike interview artist Jessica Weiss. Jessica is a New York based artist who is part of the “Take Five” exhibition at Plus Gallery, featuring influential NY artists Joanna Pousette-Dart, Joe Fyfe, John Newman, Jessica Weiss and Judith Linhares (curated by Naomi Cohn).
Plus Gallery will host an opening reception for the exhibition on January 21. The reception is free and open to the public from 6-8pm.
Jessica’s work is a mixed media exploration of color, pattern and the relationship between compositional balance and the dialogue of empty spaces.

This week Erik and Mike interview artist Julie Strasheim. With an impressive education and resume of artists’ residencies, Julie has lived and studied painting all over the United States, Italy, France, Spain, Estonia, Costa Rica, Finland, and Georgia. Julie is a two-time winner of The Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant, has her portraits in several private collections and has exhibited in various group shows. Julie currently shows at Gallery Cuvée. Julie is presently working on Project Merasi which involves painting portraits of musicians from Rajasthan, India. The objective of these works is to honor both the musicians, who are denied basic human dignity as Untouchables in the caste system of India, as well as their musical legacy of 37 generations. The paintings are being donated to raise funds to assist the Merasi in building schools in Rajasthan.

This week Erik and Mike interview artist Alvin Gregorio. In his upcoming exhibition at Vertigo Art Space, Alvin P. Gregorio collaborates with guest artists Mike Bernhardt, Amber Britton, Donald Fodness, and Anna Harber Freeman to create an environment that lies somewhere between the Villa Villa Kula of Pippi Longstocking (the place Where the Wild Things are) and indigenous bamboo hut villages of Gregorio’s Filipino ancestry. These artists have created visual expressions revolving around family history, the complexities of parenthood, and the cyclical nature of karma.

This week Erik and Mike interview Artist Josh Fishburn. Josh is an artist working in experimental video as well as interactive video game design. As an artist commenting on the violent content of industrial games and simulations as well as the industry (and culture) reinforcing depictions of gender, sexuality, and race, Josh finds it to be essential that he should deconstruct games as systems in order to uncover their ethical dimensions. He asks the question: what are the possibilities of these virtual worlds? Josh is currently exhibiting his work at Plus Gallery. and is part of a group collaboration producing one of the pieces for the Denver Art Museum’s Embrace exhibit. Past projects include being part of the IRUS Intercultural Collaborative Art Project between artists in Iran and the United States.

This week Erik and Mike interview Artist Jeff Page. Jeff studied at the San Francisco Art Institute where he received his BFA in 2002 in Interdisciplinary Studies. He has been back in Denver for the past two years and is a passionate Board Member of PlatteForum and a proud resident artist at RedLine. Jeff works primarily in the mediums of collage and installation; always interested in the braiding together of concept, intuition, and material.

This week Erik and Mike interview Artist Nick Baldridge. Nick, one of Denver’s most talked-about up and coming artists, has his first solo show at the eventgallery 910Arts. Titled “Memory Investigation,” the exhibition features wood engraved murals filled with watercolor and ink, in a dreamy style that illuminates the imaginations of his subjects and captures the elements of time. The show opens on September 18 with an artist reception from 6 to 8 pm, and continues through October 10, in the eventgallery at 910 Santa Fe Drive in Denver.

This week Erik and Mike interview Artist Mia Mulvey. Mia Mulvey’s show titled “New Work” (Vertigo Art Space, September 4 - October 31, 2009) utilizes the repetition of beautiful porcelain specimens taken from 3-D scans and prints of once-living animals. Her displays are exquisite and haunting as they touch on ideas of extinction, death, collection, and ultimately our relationship with nature. Mia is a Denver artist, also an Assistant Professor of Ceramics at the University of Denver.

In 1997, Greg Friedler’s Master of Fine Arts thesis, Naked New York, was published by WW Norton to critical acclaim. The book showcased his photographs of everyday New Yorkers from all walks of life, each shown clothed and unclothed. Naked Los Angeles and Naked London followed in 1998 and 1999 and a fourth monograph, Mattress, was published in 2001. The work has been reviewed in numerous publications including The Washington Post, The London Times, Los Angeles Magazine, The Face, Art Papers and The New York Observer. Friedler has also been interviewed on the BBC and NPR. A documentary film titled Stripped followed Greg through the shooting of one of his most recent projects Naked Las Vegas and will be available soon. Friedler’s other projects include photos from Havana, photos of vacant houses, photos of New Orleans, post-Katrina, and erotic paintings. He uses a large format camera to shoot most of his work. The images for Naked Las Vegas were made with a high-end digital capture camera.

Erik Isaak is a conceptual artist as well as a show co-host who is working on a new installation scheduled to open for the next First Friday (June 5th) titled: “In This Economy”. Michael Keen is an oil painter as well as a show co-host working primarily from his lucid dream experiences in an emotional surrealist style. Mike is also slated to appear on The Today Show on June 9th for his work in one of the most impermanent of mediums: latte art.
